Obituary of Verna Burdette

Funeral services for Verna Lee “Bunch” Burdette, age 105, of Roanoke, will be held on Thursday, August 11, 2016, at 11:00 AM from Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Ricky Cannon officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery with Quattlebaum Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends at the church for 9:30-11:00 AM on Thursday, August 11, 2016. Mrs. Burdette passed away Sunday, August 7, 2016, at her residence. Survivors include: one son, Oscar Burdett (wife, Joan) of Roanoke; four daughters, Melberlene B. Webb of Montgomery, Evelyn Harmon (husband, Harold) of Lafayette, Joan Henderson (husband, Winston) of Roanoke, and Jane Harris (husband, Ed) of Hickory, NC; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Fred Hill and Lindbergh Hill. Pallbearers will be Mrs. Burdette’s grandchildren. A lifelong Chambers County resident, Mrs. Burdette was born on June 4, 1911, the daughter of Earnest and Heard Odessa West Hill. She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and was a homemaker. Mrs. Burdette loved gardening and her flowers, and she enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and quilting, where she participated in the state quilting competition. Mrs. Burdette was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William Manning Burdette; one daughter, Martha Lee Burdette; one son-in-law, Danny A. Webb; one grandchild, Ricky Oscar Burdett; three sisters, Lela Mae Liles, Odessa Meacham, and Dorothy Hill; and two brothers, Webster Hill and Roy Watson Hill. Memorials may be floral or donations may be made to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church or LifeChoice Hospice.
