Obituary of Calvin R. Sledge

OBITUARY Funeral services for Calvin R. Sledge, age 78, of Roanoke, will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, October 3, 2016, at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jamie Taylor and Rev. Tim Whaley officiating. Burial will follow at Randolph Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Sunday, October 2nd. Mr. Sledge died Saturday, October 1, 2016, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika. Survivors include one daughter, Robbie Sledge Whaley of Roanoke; two grandsons, Rich Whaley and Nick Whaley, both of Roanoke; two special nieces, Jonnette Payne and Cathy Crumpton. Pallbearers will be Blu Sledge, John Payne, Richard Sledge, Randy Sledge, Rick Seymour and Wes Seymour. Honorary pallbearers will be Harlin Nix, Ben Beaird and Mike Mitchell. A lifelong Roanoke resident, Mr. Sledge was born May 3, 1938, the son of L. K. and Mary Evelyn Faulkner Sledge. He was a Navy veteran, a member of Southside Baptist Church and a self-employed masonry contractor. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Thelma N. Sledge; and a son, Nichols Dwayne Sledge. Memorials may be floral or the family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
