Dr. Morton Felsenstein, a retired physician, died of complications from a hip fracture Wednesday Jan. 4, 2017 at East Alabama Medical Center. The Roanoke resident was 90. Morton Felsenstein was born in Norristown, PA, Jan. 30, 1926, the youngest of three children born to the late Sarah and Jacob Felsenstein, immigrant Americans from Russia and Austria respectively. Following graduation from high school, he served two years in the US Navy as a pharmacy technician right as WWII was escalating. After his military service, Dr. Felsenstein earned his bachelor's degree from Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA and then obtained his medical degree in from Hahnemann Medical College (now Drexel College of Medicine) in Philadelphia, PA, graduating first in his class. His education propelled him into a distinguished medical career, exemplified by his election into Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society. He interned at a private medical practice for one year in Wilmington, DE, followed by a 2 -year internship at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL. Dr. Felsenstein then moved to Miami, FL for his residency training in Internal Medicine at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Felsenstein established a successful internal medicine private practice in Miami that lasted many years. It was also in Miami that he met his future wife Judy Clack. They were married in 1970 and they enjoyed 20 years of marriage together. She remained a life-long friend up to his death. Dr. Felsenstein retired to Roanoke, AL in 1990 where he quickly endeared himself to the warm-hearted community. In his retirement, he spent much of his time writing, contributing scholarly articles to peer-reviewed journals. He had a passion for medicine and would volunteer his medical expertise as a physician within the community, applying his skills as a master of diagnosing illness and disease. He was best characterized as being like a “dog with a bone” in that he would not let go until he identified a reason for a particular illness. An honest and modest man, Dr. Felsenstein was also a true renaissance man, engaged in scholarly writing and activity up until his death. He is survived by his former wife, Judy Felsenstein of Miami, FL and his many friends in both Roanoke, AL and Miami, FL whose lives he touched. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 15, 2017, at 2:00 PM from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel at 319 College Street, Roanoke, AL.
