Funeral services for Jewel Edward “Ed” Ray, age 87, of Opelika, formerly of Roanoke, will be held on Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at 3:00 PM from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with Rev. Mike Wells officiating. Burial will follow at Randolph Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00-3:00 PM on Tuesday, March 14 before services begin. Mr. Ray passed away Sunday, March 12, 2017, at Arbor Springs Health & Rehab in Opelika. Survivors include: three daughters, Judy and Tim Bennett of Wadley, Marsha and Dennis Teel of Opelika, and Sandy and Lee Daniel of Roanoke; one son, Bruce and Judy Ray of Woodland; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Louise Gardei of West Point, Janie Mitchum of Roanoke and Ruth Lee of Atlanta; and one brother James “Jimmy” Ray of Roanoke. Pallbearers will be Jason Ray, Jake Hammock, Trace Scalf, Brandon Bennett, Jakob Daniel, and Nathan Teel. A long-time Roanoke resident, Mr. Ray was born in LaGrange, Georgia, on April 9, 1929, the son of James William “Bill” Ray, Sr., and Mary Borders Ray. He was a member of Center Chapel Baptist Church and retired from Amoco where he worked in Quality Control. Mr. Ray was a United States Air Force Veteran and was also a member of the Roanoke Masonic Lodge. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Patricia Ray.
