Graveside services for Nell Landers Shelnutt, 94, of Roanoke will be held on Thursday, April 9, 2020, at 11:00 AM at Antioch Christian Church Cemetery with Bro. Scott Hannah officiating and Quattlebaum Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Shelnutt passed away Monday, April 6, 2020, at her residence. Survivors include: two sons, Dr. Sam Shelnutt (Janie) of Roanoke and Joe Shelnutt (Ginger) of Granbury, Texas; four grandchildren: Chase Shelnutt (Meg) of Andalusia, Wade Shelnutt (Rebecca Goodman) of Opelika, Savanna Shelnutt of Ithaca, New York, and Kyla Shelnutt of Granbury, Texas; and two great-grandchildren: Owen Davis Shelnutt and Mary Arlen Shelnutt; niece, Patricia Culbreth; and three nephews: Jimmy Landers, Bob Landers, and Dave Landers. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Culbreth, John Harmon, Caleb Kinsey, Jimmy Landers, Bob Landers, and Dave Landers. A lifelong resident of the Doublehead Community, Mrs. Shelnutt was born on August 5, 1925, the youngest child of A. I. “Doc” Landers and Emily Hamlin landers. She attended Five Points Elementary School and then Handley High School, graduating in 1944. After graduation she attended Birmingham Business College where she was a member of the women’s basketball team. Upon graduation she took a clerical position with Moore Handley Hardware in Birmingham. She returned to Roanoke and took a position with City Bank and Trust Company for a short time before joining Palm Beach Company as office manager – a position she held for 37 years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a past member of the Roanoke Pilot Club. Mrs. Shelnutt was a longtime member of Roanoke Christian Church where she served faithfully. She loved her church and church family immensely, always speaking fondly of her fellow members. Recently she moved her membership back to Antioch Christian Church where she had attended as a child with her family. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Shelnutt was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Owen N. Shelnutt; two brothers: A. I. Landers, Jr., and James Raymond Landers; two sisters: Annie Laura S. Denney and Cleo Christine Landers; and niece, Jane Landers McPherson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Antioch Christian Church Cemetery Fund c/o Frank Benford, 3461 County Road 241, Roanoke, AL 36274.
