Moving to Roanoke in 1987 with my family, I immediately started work at Randolph medical Center as RN on night shift. It was then I met and began to work with Dr. Mel Holmes. He immediately became my friend. So witty and easy to work and comminicate with. He never fussed about being called at all hours of the night with questions or concerns. If you needed him, he was there……. Very quickly I might add. Always with a smile, deep voice and maybe a laugh, I truly loved Dr Holmes. You are truly missed,
Connie Yawn and family

Dearest family, we were so saddened to hear about Dr Holmes !! I worked with him for years at Randolph County Hospital and helped him deliver vet so many babies!
He never complained when I would call him at night about an OB patient or one of his in-house patients! He loved serving the citizens of Roanoke especially the older generation! He was a joy to work with and by his side! I loved hearing that deep voice on the other end of the phone ! Grateful I am for knowing him, working with him , so proud to call him my friend and I will carry with me the nuggets of wisdom he shared with me over the years we worked together!
We always had a going race with our birthdays - he was 6 months older than me and when he would have his birthday in July, I would always refer to him as ‘ old man’- he would grin and say yeah yeah !!!
The last few years were not too good for him - he didn’t get out much —occasionally one would see him at our local Wal Mart! That was a treat for those who did see him!
We just had our Randolph County Hospital yearly reunion on the 18th of Jan ——so if ya’ll listen to his voice mail or read the texts on his phone you will laugh at some of them !!
Fly High Mel - you touched many lives and you will be missed! Tell Dr Primm and Dr Everett they are missed down here too !!

Dr. Holmes was the kindest, most compassionate doctor and man that I have ever known. He developed a personal relationship with every patient he ever had. They don't make them like him anymore. He will be missed.
