Freeman Roscoe Akins, Jr., age 88, of Opelika, passed away on Friday, July 11, 2025, surrounded by loved ones at his home. 

Survivors include: one son; one son-in-law; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and a very special friend, Tom.

A Roanoke native, Mr. Akins was born on June 16, 1937, the son of Freeman Roscoe Akins, Sr. and Sarah Malinda Thompson Akins.  He was a member of Welcome Home Baptist Church and worked as an equipment operator for the State of Alabama road department.  Mr. Akins was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Felicia Smith; grandson, Jonathan Tanner; 8 siblings; nephew, Barry Tommy Freeman, Sr. and niece, Daisy May Bussey.
