Hershel Eugene Battle Obituary

Funeral services for Hershel Eugene Battle, age 77, of Wadley will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 2:00 PM, at County Line Baptist Church with Rev. W.H. Trammell officiating.  Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery with Quattlebaum Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.


Mr. Battle transitioned on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at his home in the presence of his loving family.


He was the youngest of nine children.  He was born July 11, 1948, to the late Mr. Leonard Battle, Sr., and Mrs. Katie Wyckoff Battle.  He accepted Christ at an early age and joined County Line Baptist where he was an active member.  He attended County Line Training School and later Pleasant Grove Training School, where he finished his studies.


Hershell met and married Gladys Heard and to this union, five children were born.  He was a jack of many trades, farming, construction, and he was a wonderful mechanic.  Mr. Battle was a hard worker. After many years of hard work, he eventually retired from landscaping supervision at Plantation Patterns in Wadley, AL.  He always provided for his family.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Leonard Battle, Sr., and Mrs. Katie Wyckoff Battle; one sister, Mitty Lee Lewis; five brothers, Leonard Battle, Jr., Benjamin Battle, Veron Battle, Melvin Battle, and Willie Rufus Battle.


He leaves to cherish his wife, Mrs. Gladys Battle of Wadley, AL; five children, Patricia (David) Sanders of Columbus, GA, Amanda and Maybeline Battle of Roanoke, AL, Emily (Devonte) Ellis of Wadley, AL, and Benjamin Battle of Roanoke, AL; one sister, Ms. Jean Zachery of Wadley, AL; two brothers, Mr. Willie James Battle of Wadley, AL, and Mr. Robert Lewis Battle of Roanoke, AL; three sisters-in-law, Tina Battle of Roanoke, Mrs. Adline (Freddy) Kidd of Daviston, AL, and Ms. Gertrude Foster (Bobby) of Roanoke, AL;  one brother-in-law, Mr. Garfield Heard of LaGrange, GA; and one aunt, Mrs. Virginia Cox of Dadeville, AL.  He was the proud granddaddy of 19 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, including special grandchildren, Za’riah Battle, Alicia Battle and William Trammell. He was also survived by a devoted cousin and best friend, James Frank Battle; special nieces, Mrs. Catherine McWilliams, Ms. Elaine Lewis; and Mrs. Earnestine Battle Capers; special nephew, Mr. Amos Battle; Goddaughter, Mrs. Shanda Powell Adams; and special employers and friends, Ms. Catherine Pearson, Mrs. Linda Sanchez Briones, Mr. Jimmy Cleveland, Mr. Johnny Cleveland, Mr. Mark Lowery.


Memorials may be floral.
