Obituary for Sara Traylor Drummond

December 19, 1939 – November 22, 2025

God writes storybooks for people. While those who loved her would have welcomed a few more chapters, the earthly story of Sara Traylor Drummond was lovingly completed on November 22, 2025. We take comfort in imagining her story continuing in Heaven, surrounded by those who went before her.

Sara lived a life centered on faith, family, and friendship.  A long time, faithful worker in the First Baptist church, she quietly served others in countless ways over the years. Though she made her home in Roanoke, Alabama, some of her greatest joys were her frequent trips to Round Rock, Texas, to visit family, and her twice-weekly FaceTime calls with her great-grandsons. She also built a circle of friends in Round Rock who came to think of her as a part-time Texan.

Born December 19, 1939, in Woodland, Alabama, Sara was the youngest child of Leon and Thelma Traylor. As the “late arrival,” she was doted on and lovingly spoiled by her parents and much older siblings Ben, Carolyn, and Max, all of whom preceded her in death. Their close-knit family roots shaped the way she loved and cared for others all her life.

Sara’s banking career spanned more than 27 years, where her energy, strong work ethic, and warm personality were well known. Never one to sit still for long, she began a second career after retirement as a substitute teacher with the Handley school system, a role she enjoyed for roughly 25 years. She delighted in working with students and still loved running into former students who remembered “Mrs. Drummond” with a smile.

A dedicated community leader, Sara was active in numerous local efforts. Among them, she served with the Roanoke School Association, which was instrumental in saving the City Auditorium and funding many projects that benefited Roanoke City Schools. She was proud of any effort that strengthened the schools and community she loved.  As Treasurer of the Randolph Baptist Association, she was instrumental in restoring financial stability.

Sara’s hobbies and pastimes were many. She was an excellent cook and continued cooking often—right up until one week before her passing. A Master Gardener, she volunteered with Callaway Resort & Gardens and poured the same care into her own yard, where she loved gardening and collecting plants. In her not-so-spare time, she was also known to enjoy a good stash of Mini Buckeyes. Sara was dynamic, giving, feisty, and opinionated—in the best way—and you always knew where you stood with her. Her honesty, sense of humor, and generous spirit will be dearly missed.

Sara is survived by her daughter Ann (Hunter) Dodson of Round Rock, Texas; her grandson Hunter (Amy) Dodson; and her great-grandsons Kai and Remy Dodson of Hutto, Texas. She is also survived by nephews David (Sandra) Daniel of Woodland, Richard (Sharon) Daniel of Wedowee, and Jimmy Traylor of Douglasville, Georgia; along with a number of great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews whom she loved. Of particular note is dear friend Angie McDaniel Woods, whose kindness and care were a true godsend to Sara in so many ways.

Visitation will be held on Monday, November 24, 2025, from 4:00-7:00 PM at Quattlebaum Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 25, 2025 at Roanoke First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Randolph Memory Gardens.
