James Ray "Jimmy" Cotney Obituary
James Ray “Jimmy” Cotney, Jr., passed away peacefully at home on March 31, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was born on April 13, 1950, in Wadley, Alabama, where he was also raised.
Jimmy was the son of James Ray Cotney, Sr. and Kathleen A. Cotney. In 1968, he answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Marine Corps. He proudly served from 1968 to 1970 and remained deeply committed to that identity throughout his life. He was quick to remind others that he was a Marine first—not simply a Vietnam veteran.
He made his living as a truck driver, where he was well known on the CB radio by his handle, “Deadeye,” a nickname earned through his exceptional marksmanship. Jimmy had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and the simple things in life. He enjoyed shooting, fishing along the river, and cheering on Auburn football. Anyone who knew him likely has a story connected to one of these passions.
Though he could sometimes be perceived as a bit of a loner, those closest to him knew the depth of his love for his family. He will be remembered for his strong spirit, his independence, and the quiet but meaningful way he cared for those around him.
Jimmy is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sherry Cotney; his sister, Janice (Phillip) McGill; his brother, Mark Cotney; and his sister, Lou Ann Tapley. He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Arnold Cotney.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 3, 2026, at 12 noon at the Sims Family Cemetery led by Brother Benny Yates.
