Funeral services for Henry “Red” Bates, age 78, of Wadley will be held on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with Bro. Chuck Potts officiating.  Burial will follow at Concord Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM on Wednesday before services begin.

Mr. Bates passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton.

Survivors include: one son, Neal Bates of Wadley; four grandchildren, Scotty Lee Brown, Joshua Shane Brown, Stephen Jenkins, and Audriana Hunter; three great-grandchildren, Wyatt Hunter, Judah Hunter, and Joshua Elijah Brown; one brother, John Bates; and one sister, Kathy Gilmer.

Pallbearers will be Wayne Marquardt, Ted Mitchell, Leon Rogers, Shane Brown, Steven Rogers, and Wesley Morris.  Paul Rogers will serve as an honorary pallbearer.

An Oxford, Alabama native, Mr. Bates was born in Talladega on June 30, 1947, the son of John Thomas and Lucille Peoples Bates.  He was Baptist by faith and worked as a leadperson in the cutting department at Plantation Patterns.  Mr. Bates was a United States Marine Corp veteran of the Vietnam conflict.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and walking his dog. He also served 25 plus years as a Randolph County reserve deputy.  Mr. Bates was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Barbara Rogers Bates; two daughters, Stacy Brown and Brenda Jenkins; and siblings, Dixon Bates, Sue Barber, Thomas Bates, Jerry Bates, and Loisann Stedham.

Memorials may be floral but please no lilies due to a family allergy.
