A Heard County native, Mrs. Bennett was born on April 13, 1940, the daughter of James Eddie Laws and Tommie Rae Jackson Laws. She was a graduate of Heard County High School. After graduation, she married the love of her life, Billy Bennett, and moved to Rock Mills where they built their forever home and raised their children. Mrs. Bennett was a country girl and she found a country boy in Mr. Billy. She worked at Playtex for a few years where she quickly learned to sew. She later worked at Heard County Hospital as a nursing assistant. Mrs. Bennett became the proud owner and founder of the legendary Bennett’s Grocery store where she worked for many years serving and caring for her beloved community. She devoted her life to nurturing and caring for two generations of children. After closing the store and retiring, she became a homemaker raising her two grandkids and cooking every day. Her kitchen and flower garden were her two favorite places to be. In later years, she was blessed with the title of great-grandmother where she poured her love, time and wisdom. Mrs. Joan was a devoted wife, mother, sister, and Nana.
