Former Circuit Judge and longtime Roanoke attorney Lewis H. Hamner, Jr., died Wednesday, March 16, 2016, at age 88. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Marion Pinnell Hamner; two sons, Dr. Lewis H. Hamner, III, of Atlanta, GA, and Lee Rodgers Hamner (Beth) of Gray, GA; three grandchildren, Nicholas Hamner (Ashton), Jessica Hamner Blackburn (Matt), and Hampton Hamner; and one brother, Dr. Bennie R. Hamner of Montgomery, AL. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Lewis H. Hamner and Lillian Rodgers Hamner and one son, Jodie Pinnell Hamner. Judge Hamner was born on February 21, 1928, and grew up in Camp Hill, Alabama. He graduated from high school in 1945 and from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1950. Shortly after the Korean War began, he was called to active duty in the United States Army and served 21 months, including 11 months in Korea and Japan as an Assistant Staff Judge Advocate in the 1st Cavalry Division. Judge Hamner served two terms as a Bar Commissioner of the Alabama State Bar. He was a member and officer of the American Legion, VFW, Lions Club, Roanoke Quarterback Club, and other organizations. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Roanoke. His active career in the legal profession covered over 50 years. Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church on Sunday, March 20, 2016, at 2:00 PM with Rev. Steve Dean officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery with Quattlebaum Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00-7:00 PM on Saturday, March 19, 2016. Judge Hamner will lie in state for one hour prior to services beginning on Sunday. Pallbearers will be Earl Manning, Spec Bonner, Tommy Hill, John Daniel, Byron Morrison, Tommy Cato, and Jimmy McKinney In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Roanoke, 827 Main Street, Roanoke, AL 36274.
