Obituary of Della Rose Matthews

Funeral services for Della Rose Matthews, age 97, of Opelika, formerly of Five Points, will be held on Friday, December 11, 2015, at 1:00 pm (Central time) at Five Points Baptist Church with Rev. Rusty Williams officiating. Burial will follow at the adjoining cemetery with Quattlebaum Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
The family will receive friends at the church for one hour beginning at 12 noon (Central time) on Friday.
Mrs. Matthews died Tuesday, December 8, 2015, at Bethany House in Auburn.
Survivors include two daughters, Deedie Matthews of Opelika and Evelyn Newton of Five Points; four grandchildren, John Littlepage, Melissa Garrity, Ian Morse and Will Newton; two great-grandchildren, Erik Aquino and Boston Littlepage; one sister, Carolyn Jones (husband, Fuller C.) of Merritt Island, FL; one brother, Calvin Deuel of Huntsville; and a sister-in-law, Marion Deuel of Huntsville.
Pallbearers will be Trip Garner, Tim Garner, John Robinson, Raymond Deuel, Mike McTaggart and John Matthews.
A native of Lewiston, Montana, Mrs. Matthews was born July 13, 1918, the daughter of Earl Charles and Ethel Mae Holden Deuel. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Matthews was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Rufus Matthews, Jr.; two brothers, Robert Deuel and Glen Deuel; and one sister, Donna Bond.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Bethany House (1171 Gatewood Drive, Suite 100, Auburn AL 36830) or to the charity of one’s choice.

Quattlebaum’s was founded in 1930 by Robert B. Quattlebaum on Roanoke’s West Point Street. Relocated to Maple Drive, Quattlebaum Funeral Home was just across from Knight Sanatorium for many years. In 1953, a new building was constructed on College Street – where the funeral home is today.
