Obituary of Walter Phillips

OBITUARY Funeral services for Walter Phillips, age 82, of Roanoke, will be held Friday, January 14, 2011, at 12 noon from Rehope Baptist Church with Revs. Calvin Trammel, William Phillips, H. L. Jones, Luther Phillips and Jeffrey Rosser officiating. Burial will follow at Peace and Goodwill Baptist Church Cemetery with Quattlebaum Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, January 13th. Mr. Phillips died Friday, January 7, 2011, at his home. Survivors include three daughters, Dr. Janice P. Winston (Norman) of Lithonia, Ga., Jacqueline P. Ray of Roanoke and Joanna P Stone (Ernest) of Birmingham; two sisters, Evelyn Gates and Vera Heath, both of Roanoke; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Robert Elton Joiner, Michael Joiner, James Phillips, Kenny Phillips, Raymond Phillips, Victor Huffman, Benny Heflin and Bennie Higgins. Honorary pallbearers will be Calvin Phillips, Willie Phillips, Ray Gates and Raymond Slay. A lifelong resident of Chambers and Randolph Counties, Mr. Phillips was born January 1, 1929, son of Willie and Mattie Burrow Phillips. He was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church and had retired from Head Marble Company where he worked as a marble and granite cutting specialist. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lera Joiner Phillips; a brother, Luther Phillips; three sisters, Lillian Phillips, Christine Smedley and Dera Phillips.
