Obituary of Willie Howard Calloway

Funeral services for Willie Howard Calloway, age 93, of Roanoke will be held on Monday, March 6, 2017, at 2:00 PM from Sword of the Spirit with Rev. B. J. Jackson officiating. Burial will follow at Skyview Cemetery with Quattlebaum Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4:00-6:00 PM on Sunday, March 5, 2017. Mr. Calloway will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to services beginning on Monday. Mr. Calloway passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2017, at Roanoke Healthcare Center. Survivors include: two daughters, Maggie Hill (Alfred Jr.) and Dorothy Trammell; two sons, David Calloway (Betty) and Curtis Calloway; one brother, Ernest Calloway; 21 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Mr. Calloway’s nephews and grandchildren. A long-time Roanoke resident, Mr. Calloway was born in Lafayette, Alabama, on December 22, 1923, the son of Luther and Maggie Calloway. Willie confessed Christ at an early age and joined Antioch Baptist Church in Lafayette, Alabama. He joined the United States Army and served four years. His employment includes Roanoke City Utilities Board for 30 years and retired. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and delivering vegetables to the neighborhood, family and friends. Mr. Calloway was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mattie Sims Calloway; one daughter, Hattie Sue Calloway; one grandson, Antonio Fuller; one granddaughter, Maye Fuller; one daughter-in-law, Glenda Calloway; three brothers, Edward Bailey, Willie Bailey, and Johnny Calloway; and one sister, Beulah Mae Bailey.
