Obituary of Maxine Gunn Gross

Funeral services for Maxine Gunn Gross, age 87, of Roanoke, will be held on Monday, April 24, 2017, at 3:00 PM from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with Rev. Ryan Conger and Rev. Mike Nobbley officiating. Burial will follow at White’s Chapel Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:30-3:00 PM on Monday.
Mrs. Gross passed away on Saturday, April 22, 2017, at Traylor’s Nursing Center.
Survivors include two daughters, Dianne Brumbeloe Benefield of Opelika, AL and Kathy Crabtree (husband, Bobby) of Roanoke, AL; one grandchild, Justin Benefield of Auburn, AL; and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Keith Blue, Ray Crabtree, Johnny Sanders, John Gunn, Austin Brown, and Andrew Brown.
A lifelong resident of Randolph County, Mrs. Gross was born on January 14, 1930, the daughter of William Quarron and Sally Cook Gunn. She attended Rock Stand Congregational Christian Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher and was involved with Vacation Bible School. She had worked for Palm Beach as a seamstress. She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Purvis, Earl, Hubert, and Ralph Gunn; one sister, Louise Tidwell; and one granddaughter, Beth Crabtree Bassett.

Quattlebaum’s was founded in 1930 by Robert B. Quattlebaum on Roanoke’s West Point Street. Relocated to Maple Drive, Quattlebaum Funeral Home was just across from Knight Sanatorium for many years. In 1953, a new building was constructed on College Street – where the funeral home is today.
