Obituary of Mattie Mae Akins Overton

Funeral services for Mattie Mae Akins Overton, age 93, of Roanoke, AL, will be held on Sunday, July 22, 2018, at 2:00 PM from Welcome Home Baptist Church with Rev. Derek Farr and Rev. Juan Zarate officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery with Quattlebaum Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00-8:00 PM on Saturday, July 21, 2018. Mrs. Overton will lie in state at the church one hour prior to services beginning on Sunday.

Mrs. Overton passed away on Wednesday, July 18, 2018, at her home.

She is survived by five daughters, Frances Smith (Thomas) of Roanoke, AL, Dovie Cofield (LeeRoy) of Roanoke, AL, Judy Livingston (Tug) of West Point, GA, Leuticia Barber (Parker) of Roanoke, AL, and Wanda Weathers (Felix) of Cabot, AR; one son, Jody Overton (Sharon) of Roanoke, AL; 20 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Lucille Richardson of Carrollton, GA, Mary Craft of Wedowee, AL, Margaret Holloway of Wedowee, AL, and Nell McIntosh of Waco, GA; and one brother, Edward Akins of Wedowee, AL.

Mrs. Overton’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers and great-grandsons will serve as honorary pallbearers.

A Bowdon, GA native, Mrs. Overton was born on December 22, 1924, the daughter of George Garfield and Lillie Mae Thompson Akins. She was a member of Welcome Home Baptist Church and had worked as a seamstress for Palm Beach. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Boyd Bruce Overton; one son, Boyd Overton; three sisters, Willie Pearl Akins, Willie Grace Akins, and Magaline Akins; and two brothers, Loyd Akins and James Akins.
