OBITUARY
Graveside services for, Mrs. Margaret Smith Awbrey, age 92, of Roanoke, will be held at 1:00 pm, Friday, July 1, 2011, from Randolph Memory Gardens with Rev. Steve Dean officiating. Quattlebaum Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm at the funeral home on Friday, July 1st.
Mrs. Awbrey died June 29, 2011 at Traylor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Awbrey is survived by two daughters, Janie (husband Sam) Shelnutt of Roanoke, Judy (husband Rick) Childress of Hoover; one sister, Doris Smith Greene of LaGrange, GA; four grandchildren, Awbrey Childress of Jackson, MS, Aaron Childress and Fiance'Emily O'Neil of Hoover, Chase Shelnutt and wife Meg of Andalusia, Wade Shelnutt of Alexander City; many extended members of the Smith and Awbrey families.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and son-in-laws.
Mrs. Awbrey was born, January 1, 1919, the daughter of William Henry and Verna Anglin Smith. After graduating from Five Points High School in 1936, she worked as a beautician at Danley's Drugs in Roanoke and later as a bookkeeper for McDonald Lumber before marrying Mr. Awbrey in 1944; she then became a house wife and later full-time mother and volunteer for her daughters' activities. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Roanoke where she visited with and delivered Home Life magazines to home-bound members and new mothers. Her love of cooking allowed her to contribute many delicious food dishes to meals for grieving family members. A long-time competitive Bridge player, she had belonged to several Bridge clubs; she also enjoyed sewing, gardening, working crossword puzzles and watching Auburn football. She also had been a member of the Crepe Myrtle Garden Club. Mrs. Awbrey was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Awbrey; her parents; three brothers, Douglas, Cary and Frank Smith; one sister, Alice.
