Obituary of Martha Staples
Graveside services for Martha Pike Staples, 82, of Roanoke will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2020, at 1:00 PM at Pleasant Grove Baptist Cemetery-Broughton with Bro. Billy Allen and Bro. Tim Craft officiating and Quattlebaum Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00-8:00 PM on Friday, September 25, 2020.
Mrs. Staples passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2020, at Baptist Medical Center East in Montgomery.
Survivors include her children, Iris Cindy Wilkins Hendrix (Scott), Luther Marion Staples, Jr., and Libby Knott Tolbert (Buddy), all of Roanoke; 12 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Johnnie Pike Taylor (Don) of Roanoke and Gloria Pike Moore of Montgomery; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Pallbearers will be Rodney Knott, Jr., Steven Knott, David Brooks, Justin Hendrix, Carl Williams, Dusty Adams, Josh Caldwell, Jim Pike, and Daniel Tyler.
The family requests that face coverings be worn.
A Roanoke native, Mrs. Staples was born in Chambers County on January 7, 1938, the daughter of John Simpsie and Fannie Lou Eva Shelnutt Pike. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where she held many offices, all of which she enjoyed very much, and served in the Beginners’ Sunday School Class, Nursery, Girls in Action Mission Study Group, Choir, and as a Deacon’s wife. Mrs. Staples was employed by several textile mills including West Point Mill in the Valley, Fair Fax and Fairview mills in West Point, Georgia, and Valley, Alabama, Palm Beach, Roanoke Fashions, and Amoco Fabrics and Fibers, all of which were in Roanoke. She retired from Amoco where she worked in the spinning department. Mrs. Staples was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 40 years, Luther M. Staples, Sr.; great-grandson, Aydon Sheppard; sister, Geraldine Pike Shipp; and brother, Jimmy M. Pike.
