I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Richard....he was a wonderful young man that I enjoyed getting to know in the various biology courses he took from me, including our 2006 trip to the Galapagos Islands and the cloud forest in Ecuador. He was a Biology minor but acted every bit like a Biology major with his interest and excitement in everything biology that was right up there with my own over the top levels of excitement!! My sincerest condolences go out to his family and friends.

The Presbyterian College English Department would like to express its sadness over the passing of our alumnus Richard Parmer ’07. We remember Richard as a quiet, yet articulate lover of literature and music. He was open to learning and expanding his knowledge of pop culture and the arts and was happy to share his knowledge, including with his professors. His sense of fun was evident in a warm smile, ever at the ready, and a memorable appearance on Halloween for Trick or Treat in costume at the Clinton homes of his professors. Richard worked closely with Dr. Alexander on his Honors Research project entitled “’The Pleasures of Opium’ and the ‘Pains of Sleep’: Detecting the Mysterious Effects of Opium on Romantic and Victorian English Literature.” In the spirit of that formative connection, the department is making a donation in fond memory of Richard Parmer to the Dr. Jerry Alexander Memorial Fund, which helps fund student travel to academic conferences.

At ETSU, where Richard got his MA, we just learned today that he had walked on. So sorry for your loss--for this world's loss. Richard was one of my favorite graduate students in my 22 years at ETSU, and I was pleased about his subsequent accomplishments at the University of Kentucky. Recently, I've been proud to see him presenting his work at the Charles Brockden Brown Society conferences. Those were good times to check in with him, and I'm particularly grateful now for having had the opportunity to do so.

Dear Ricky, Rita and Lynn,
It has taken me a while to be able to write anything. Richard was taken far, far too soon, and I know that you are shattered and heartbroken. I pray fervently for your comfort, strength, and eventual healing.
I will always remember Richard as the last kid to leave the media center when most others couldn’t get out of those tests soon enough! Even then, he always made every effort, not just to finish before time was called, but to get it right. Using his time well and taking advantage of his opportunities were strengths he carried with him (along with his significant abilities and sense of humor) to Presbyterian College and beyond. His years were tragically too short; but oh my goodness how well he used that time! He accomplished so much and touched so many lives—an enviable record by any measurement!
I know you are all so proud of him and love him, even as he loves you. Yes, I used present tense because love is eternal.
I am so privileged to have had the Academy years with the Parmers!

To his friends and family, I am sorry for your loss. Richard was a student of mine his freshman year at PC and I can still vividly remember how his personality and presence made that class one of the most memorable I've ever had. He truly was an amazing person.

Dear friends and family of Richard--I am so saddened to learn this news. I met Richard through graduate school at UK. He was always kind and thoughtful--a welcome addition to any conversation--and he enriched the experiences of all those around him. Thank you for being a fellow traveler, friend.

Richard, I was so sad to hear of your sudden passing. I will never forget the first day we met-- grad school orientation-- I saw you and knew I wanted to be your friend! You were so warm, generous with your laugh and smile, and tall! I'll never forget your charming southern drawl and your love of all things pumpkin spice. Thinking of you, Richard. -- Love, Jenna Goldsmith

I am so sorry for your loss. Richard was the third person to welcome me to the South. We shared an office at the University of Kentucky for six years, and Richard was a constant source of laughter, joy, confidence, and support. He always had a kind word at work, a delicious dish at a potluck, or a warm hug ready to go for anyone who needed it. He was an incredible man, deeply cherished by all who met him, and the world is severely diminished in his absence.
