Obituary of James N. "Jabo" Wood

James N. “Jabo” Wood, age 93, of Roanoke, passed away on Sunday, February 25, 2024, at his home.    

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Tuesday, February 27, 2024.  A private burial will be held at Randolph Memory Gardens. 

Survivors include one daughter, Jan Leatherman (Tim) of Alabaster; one son, Tommy Wood (Gale) of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Michael Wood, Kristen Dean (Chris), and Emily Janchus (Nate); four great-grandchildren, Jake Dean, Sara Dean, Tucker Janchus, and Lucy Janchus; and one brother, Bill Wood of Colorado.

Honorary pallbearers will be Chris Dean, Nate Janchus, Michael Wood, Jake Dean, and Tucker Janchus.

A Birmingham native, Mr. Wood was born on November 24, 1930, the son of Francis Guy Wood and Iris Yearwood Wood.  He was Christian by faith and had attended Powderly Baptist Church, Brookhaven Methodist Church, and Pineywoods Church of Christ. Mr. Wood was employed by U. S. Steel and Prosoft for over 60 years.  While at U. S. Steel, he completed the management program for the electrical lab and was a member of the engineering team that computerized the production process at the Fairfield Works.  Additionally, Mr. Wood operated a small electrical wiring business and was active in community projects, including Little League Baseball and the Parent-Teacher Association.  He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, two sisters and his wife of 75 years, Barbara C. Wood. 

The family would like to express their gratitude for the excellent care provided by Compassus Hospice.  In lieu of flowers, they would appreciate memorials be made to Compassus Hospice, 4455 Highway 431, Roanoke, AL 36274.
