Obituary of Don Wayne Smith
Funeral services for Don Wayne Smith, age 63, of Roanoke will be held on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Welcome Home Baptist Church with Bro. Mike Brewer and Bro. Parker Barber officiating. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery with Quattlebaum Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00-8:00 PM on Wednesday, May 15, 2024. Mr. Smith will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to services beginning on Thursday.
Mr. Smith passed away on Monday, May 13, 2024, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
Survivors include his wife, Brett McClendon Smith of Roanoke; one daughter, Christina Darnell Bailey (Kyle) of Opelika; one grandchild, Annie Louise Bailey; his parents, Thomas and Frances Smith; two sisters, Deb Smith and Pat Smith; two brothers, Ricky Smith and Shane Smith (Mary); and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Dustin Smith, Joey Overton, David Laws, Mike Owens, Cody Lee, and Ray Hill. Honorary pallbearers will be Kyle Bailey and Jason Greer.
A lifelong Roanoke resident, Mr. Smith was born on March 8, 1961, the son of Thomas and Frances Overton Smith. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and worked in construction with Daniel Construction and in logging with Kenneth Arrington. Mr. Smith was an avid Alabama fan, “Roll Tide,” and loved the outdoors, animals, and helping people. One of his last statements was “I had a great life and the best of friends and family.”
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bruce and Mattie Mae Overton and Joe and Mary Smith and a nephew, Stephen Smith.
