Obituary of Joy Powell Adams
Funeral services for Joy Powell Adams, age 94, of Fredericktown, MO, formerly of Roanoke will be held on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at 11:30 AM at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with John Adams and Jeff Adams officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11:00-11:30 on Wednesday before services begin.
Mrs. Adams passed away on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at Stockhoff Nursing Home in Fredericktown, MO.
Survivors include: two daughters, Susan A. Poole (Don) and Joy A. Cauthorn (Freddie); grandchildren, Aubrey Poole, Jessica Ridgel, Sean Cauthorn, and Lauren Cauthorn; great-grandchildren, Madison Rushing, Hayden Wagley, Maximus and Maverick Ridgel (twins), Maya Cauthorn, Shay Cauthorn, and Kolt Cauthorn Ralph; great-great-grandchildren, Michael “Mikey” Sonnier and Alison “Ali” Mougeot; and one sister, Carolyn Powell Evans (Roy).
A Georgia native, Mrs. Adams was born on July 23, 1930, the daughter of Benjamin Gordon and Ollie Mae Dempsey Powell. She graduated from McHenry High School in Rome, GA, in 1947 and from Berry College in Rome, GA, in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Mrs. Adams married Robert Eugene Adams in December 1952, and they were married for 43 years until his passing in May 1995. Mrs. Adams was a reading teacher with the Roanoke City Schools and continued her education earning a Master’s Degree from Auburn University in 1970. She retired from the school system after 28 plus years of helping young students improve their reading skills. Mrs. Adams was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Roanoke (60 plus years). She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert E. Adams; and her brother, Gorden Powell.
