Funeral services for Cecil Glenn Brown, Jr., age 97, of Denison, Texas, formerly of Roanoke, will be held on Tuesday, December 9, 2014, at 11:00 AM from Roanoke First United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Baccus and Dr. John Campbell officiating. Mr. Brown will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to services beginning. Burial will follow at Randolph Memory Gardens with Quattlebaum Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Ann Brown Austin and David Austin (McKinney, TX) and his brother and sister-in-law, Dr. J. Brooks Brown and Helen Brown (Jacksonville, FL).
Mr. Brown was born in Centreville, TN, the son of Cecil Glenn and Martha Ann Brooks Brown, Sr. He grew up in Hurtsboro, AL, and attended Auburn University. He enlisted in the USMC in 1941, and was designated the outstanding recruit in the 20th Platoon. During WWII, he served in the Pacific Theater with the 8th Marine Regiment, Second Marine Division, and fought in the battles of Guadalcanal, Tarawa, and Saipan. In 1957, after serving in the inactive reserves, he was honorably discharged with the rank of Major. In 2012, he was awarded the Cross of Military Service by the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Mr. Brown and his family moved to Roanoke in 1946, and he practiced pharmacy (Brown Drug Company/Brown and Danner Drugs) until 1986. Cecil loved trees, and operated Brown's Tree Farm for 20 years. His specialty was Japanese Red Maples, which he delighted in sharing with his friends and the community. Mr. Brown is preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Margaret Fletcher Ferrell.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be sent to First United Methodist Church of Roanoke, Marine Toys for Tots, or Stone Brook Assisted Living (1616 Lifesearch Way, Denison, TX 75020).
