
Obituary of Vina Calhoun
Funeral services for Vina Leavida Calhoun, age 86, of Wadley will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel in Roanoke. Burial will follow at Providence Baptist Church in Woodland, AL.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00-11:00 AM on Saturday before services begin.
Mrs. Calhoun passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at the Clay County Nursing Home in Ashland.
Mrs. Calhoun was born on October 12, 1938, the daughter of Johnny B. and Retha (Lee) Campbell in Rose Hill, VA. She was named for her maternal grandmother Vina (Combs) Lee. As a young girl she attended Pleasant View School, Blackberry Hollow Baptist Church and roamed the hills of Possum Holler. On February 21, 1955, she married Curtis Calhoun and moved to Detroit, MI. In Detroit, she was a homemaker and caretaker of her brother Paul’s children Eugene, Ricky and Kathy. After thirty years in Detroit, she retired with her husband at his homeplace of Wadley, AL. Mrs. Calhoun loved her family and enjoyed traveling to Rose Hill, VA for family reunions with them at Easter. She also enjoyed her stray cats, gardening, cross-stitch, hand quilting, BINGO, an occasional nip of Vodka and bus trips to the casino. She was a strong independent and opinionated woman loved by many. Mrs. Calhoun was blessed to have wonderful neighbors, Mr. & Mrs. Perry and her “Girls” at the Clay County Nursing Home who visited and watched over her during her last years.
Mrs. Calhoun was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Curtis Grover Calhoun; her stepson, John Calhoun (Vietnam War); two older sisters, Dorothy and Sallie; six brothers, Kenneth, twins Wilburn & Dillard, Paul, Frank and EJ. Mrs. Calhoun is survived by her younger sister, Cassie Stoner of Pennsylvania and many nieces and nephews.
